[-empyre-] live collaborative explorations online

Hi all,

I just noticed this discussion happening on here and wnated to let people know that our group frutherfield have been exploring live, online collaborative - explorations. I just wanted to mention 2 projects below, although wanted to say that we are also transmitting/boradcasting in november for 2 weeks with nontv.tv.

FurtherStudio is a unique, exploratory project, creating a platform for online, real-time, networked & new-media art residencies, offering a public window on the desktop of the artist’s personal computer whilst they work.

In the VisitorsStudio, a multi-user online arena for production, display and discussion of audiovisual, screen based work, visitors can experiment with the curatorial theme- ‘appropriation and ownership of ideas, services, products and images’. Visitors respond to each other live in real-time by uploading, manipulating, mixing and exhibiting their own compositions. The VisitorsStudio encourages people to be playful and imaginative in their interactions with each other and the network.

This year FurtherStudio has brought networked and new-media artists, Jess Loseby, Rich White and Bea Gibson, and their creative process, into audiences’ homes via the Internet; allowing all participants to experience a more direct human interaction with the concepts of these art forms, regardless of their geographical location, or social circumstance. Regular, online Critical Forums with leading net art critics have been attended by visitors around the world creating a public platform and broad critical consideration for the artists’ work.

Collaboratively developed by artists, programmers, critics and curators, with significant contributions by audiences new to art, and members of online art and technology forums, FurtherStudio and the VisitorsStudio grow organically in response to their participation. Additions and enhancements to functionality, usability and communication are made to accommodate and extend the artistic aspirations of its users.

Furtherfield is currently seeking funding to develop FurtherStudio as an international programme of online artists’ residencies, in an always-on multi-studio. Audiences new to net art and arts professionals will be able to hop between international net artists’ desktop screens as they work, and chat to them about what they are doing. Furtherfield is working with UK educational organisations including post-graduate interaction arts courses, who see the potential for this platform as both a pedagogic and remote mentoring tool.

Already, VisitorsStudio has platformed a popular series of, live, multimedia interviews with Roger Mills (editor of FurtherNoise). Guests have included the Australian sound artist Jodi Rose and experimental London, noise makers/musicians, Sijis. Artists, media labs and artists’ collectives in the USA, Balkans and Brazil, are creating global multimedia workshops and performances for the VisitorsStudio to tell their own local stories creatively in audio-visual language.

Both platforms continue to encourage people to be imaginative in their interactions with each other and the network, making real-time online connections through simple and accessible facilities. They provide the perfect platforms for explorations of distributed creativity.

If you wish to explore - you are welcome to...

all the best
